GMAT Math Percent Overview
Percent means out of 100. If you understand this concept, it becomes very easy to rename a percent as an equivalent decimal or fraction. See below some examples
8% = 8/100 = 0.8
2.7% = 2.7/100 = .027
x% = x/100 = .0x
(1/2)% = (1/2)/100 = 0.5/100 = 0.005
Certain fractional equivalents of common percents occur frequently enough that they should be memorized. Learning the values in the following will make your work with percent problems much easier.
50% = 1/2
25% = 1/4
75% = 3/4
33(1/2)% = 1/3
66(2/3)% = 2/3
12(1/2)% = 1/8
10% = 1/10
20% = 1/5
40% = 2/5
16(2/3)% = 1/6
Most percentage problems can be solved by using the following proportion:
%/100 = part/whole
Although this method works, it often yields unnecessarily large numbers that are difficult to compute. Click here to learn GMAT CAT Percent tips and tricks from our detailed video lessons.
